There is a rich and colorful history behind a small purplish berry found deep in the Amazon wetlands called the Acai berry.
Now I will tell you the story as I heard it, note that this story has been around for a very long time and there may be some chinese whisper syndrome slightly skewing the story – but who knows – either way it is a great story.
Many thousands of years ago, there lived a young Amazonian girl named Iaca. She was the daughter of the tribe’s chief. During his rule as chief, the tribe had grown in numbers significantly and no longer had enough food in the area for everyone.
In his wisdom, the tribe’s chief declared that all babies born must be killed until local food supplies were abundant again. The chief proved his commitment to the rule when his daughter Iaca had a child, the chief ordered the baby to be killed like the others – except this was his own grandchild.
Iaca mourned the death of her child like any mother would.
It is believed Iaca heard the cries of a baby in the jungle, she then followed the sounds and eventually she came across a very tall palm tree full of purple berries.
After seeing the amount of fruit on the tree and nearby trees, it is believed that the sight of food, which could have saved her daughter, was too much for her and she died right next to the tree.
The next day, the tribesmen found Iaca’s body and the trees full of fruit.
In a twisted series of events, Iaca had died, but the tribe had finally found a new food source and subsequently the brutal ruling on newborn babies was lifted by the chief.
In a tribute, the chief named the life-saving purple berry after his daughter – he named it “Acai”, which is Iaca spelt backwards.
The same tribes still live deep in the Amazon and enjoy the acai berry life.
Over hundreds of years, whilst other South American tribes died due to infections and disease from European explorers, the Acai fed tribes did not suffer the same fate due to the power of the Acai berry.
